Opportunity Knocks

Is it just me or does anyone else feel a bit like a blind man in the famed fable, The Blind Men and the Elephant when it comes to the Mars landers? A whole lot of speculations and assumptions are being made about Mars based on a very limited amount of information.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the science, but I just think we need to be a little more cautious before making these assumptions.

Back to regular programming. I finished the first sleeve, except for ribbing, of the V-necked raglan. I’m getting pretty excited now that I’m so close to finishing it. I forgot to pick up some black yarn on my way back to the office from a morning seminar. One more sleeve, and a few more inches on the body, and I’ll be done. I was down to the last 2 skeins of the yarn and decided to finish the sleeves first, and use the remainder on the body, for as long as it lasts. I should have more than enough. Even then, I still want to finish it out with a solid colored ribbing (black).

Spam Ad Wanted

Just what did my spam filter do with all those member enlargement ads? The Klein Bottle Hat is in dire need of SOMETHING. The yarn was too fine to do the job, and the darn thing was as limp as a … well, let’s just say it needed a little blue pill.

Yes, past tense. I ripped it out yesterday. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it. I have all this beautiful, soft, sock weight singles.

I had 2 half pound bumps of this roving. I spun up 1 bump. I haven’t decided if I want to spin the second bump the same way or not.

I worry that the single won’t wear well as socks. I’m thinking maybe a pair of gloves and a pair of wrist warmers. The office got quite cold this past week for some reason. And wrist warmers would be just the thing to cure that. Besides which, the colors are the company colors.

I thought about making a sweater or vest with the rest of the wool, but the repeats are too short to make the colors jump. I’ve sketched out a strip vest pattern, but I’m not sure that’s what I really want. Today, I also picked up an entrelac vest pattern, where the squares are fairly small, and should make little blocks of color. Another thought would be make a shawl/blanket with little mitered squares.

After making the gloves and wrist warmers, I think I’ll toss these skeins back into a box and let them cogitate on the possibilities. We’ll see.

I starte a top down V-necked raglan with yet another handspun. This was something that I spun and navajo plied late last spring. I have about 950 yards of DK or light worsted weight yarn. I’ll see how far it will go. All I know is that it won’t be full length sleeves. I might finish it off with some commercial black yarn for the ribbing.

And now for something totally silly … I was feeling a little punchy last week and decided to help our neighbors across the pond by putting this little poster together. (You are welcome to link to it, but please do not copy it. Thanks.)

Happy 2004!

Happy 2004! I haven’t completely disappeared. I’ve been busy doing a whole lot of nothing, and it feels great. A little spinning, a little knitting, a little swatching, and a lot of sleeping and spending time with my sweetie. I finished off a bunch of little knitted Christmas presents.

Here’s one …

Can you tell what it is? And which is the real one?

Of course, real is relative. The second photo is provided by my very gracious model, Rosie Toes. The first photo is the tail of the Davie Crockett hat, courtesy of Knitty. Believe it or not, I was wandering around the yarn store the day before Knitty came out, and came across a felted fur bag. I looked at it and kept seeing a felted ‘coon skin hat. I bought some Cascade 220 and, get this, exactly the same fur as described in the Knitty pattern. Of course, when Knitty came out, I decided that I would skip a whole lot of work (swatching, felt the swatch, make up a pattern), and just use the pattern in Knitty. It was FUN! But not an experience that I want to try again. It is impossible to see the stitches in the fur. It was not an enjoyable experience.

Of course, since it’s a present for Martin’s great nephew, we didn’t really have a hat model of the appropriate size, until I came across our Hedgehog.
