I have a heck of a time trying to control my gauge. I'm going to take a 4 day intensive from Judith this summer and hopefully I'll get a better handle on how to increase the size of my spinning. Right now, I tend to make the yarn whatever size it wants to be but I'd love to be able to control that better. You did a wonderful job with the bag yarn. I'd love to spin like that.

Yes. It's the first time I've played with tubular weave on a band. It's quite fun to create my own piping this way. It'll be trim on my bag.

A good place to get cheap hemostats is Fire Mountain Gems. If you get 15 at a time, you can get them for about $1.50 each. The more you buy, the cheaper items are. This is a great tutorial Ann. Thanks for sharing.

I concur w/ Tien w/ one caveat.
It could look really high contrast and clowny. Why not use a third neutral color to tone down the contrast? A black, navy or beige.

I'd use the two on the left. The blue and orange (brown is a dulled-out orange) are complementary colors and will make each other "pop", more so than the pink and green skein. Unless you are aiming for less pizzazz, in which case, maybe the pink and green.

Try doing either a yarn wrap or a twist (twist a small bundle of the yarns together) to see what they will look like combined.

can't wait to see how this works out. I'm putting a warp on right now from handspun in reds - I'm looking for a little bit of turquoise to add a few narrow stripes on one side as an accent. I'm not sure about what to use for weft - I have some polwarth silk that I could dye and spin up.

If you are doing a lot of hand sewing, it saves time to buy a bunch of pre-waxed hand sewing thread on a pre-strung hank. You just pull one out whenever you need one. In the costume shop, we'd thread a bunch at once and line them up on a pincushion before we begin.

Thanks, Phyllis. No, I am not giving up on it. I am betting the farm on the wet finishing process. I can sort of see the pattern but it's not as obvious/dramatic as I had envisioned. It's not bad, just a bit of a let down thus far.

The wet finishing will also help transform that stiff as a board thing to a beautiful drapey thing. It's sea silk and silk, so I should be gorgeous no matter what!

Hello

Before you give up completely on this pattern, cut off your first scarf and wet finish it. The relaxing of the threads might just biring out the results you have been looking for.

64 hours...yeah, I'm avoiding the math on the 7# Corriedale fleece in gorgeous shades of gray, black and white. I don't want all that color variegation to disappear in processing, so I've set it aside for the Stove treatment...followed by combing...and I'll spin off the comb. Random color arrangement. Love the plan. Am in complete denial about how long this will take me!! :-)

for instant gratification, there is nothing like throwing a silk scarf warp on the loom and weaving it off - just a couple of days to complete and just in time for the cooler weather.

It isn't lined, but it is easy on/off. Hard to describe, but the underside of the fabric is very smooth.

The sleeve cap will be supported by the seam and bias tape. It looks saggy now only because I haven't finished it and pressed it into place. I need to take another look at it. From the picture, it looks poofier than I remembered it. I think it's because the seam is standing on end and causing some weirdness to happen.

The jacket looks awesome. The jacket fit is just about perfect.

Will it be partially lined for easy on/off? Will you use sleeve heads to support the sleeve cap?

Oh...your loom is "heavenly"...beeee-U-teee fulllll! I am soo jealous. How did you find it? What is the weaving width? Dare I ask? or am I being too noZEEE? How much did you pay?

I really want a loom that I could do rag rugs on. I have a Baby Wolf. But, I have always lusted after a Fireside Loom. I LUV cherry woods too!

I love the sampler. The idea of a self-lined fabric is cool. I also like the muted color blocks on the front. I know you said the color bled through too much but I liked the way it did.

Whoo hoo! I had always failed at figuring out how to staple these without purchasing a long-arm stapler! At a recent workshop, one woman had printed out a picture on large photo paper, which she then folded for the cover--it was the perfect weight for a cover and the photo represented the colors of her project. I thought it was a great idea.

Nice job! Especially on turning the huck and making the borders.

BTW -- the "weird crazed lines" are probably just tracking. There's been a good discussion of this in the last month on WeaveTech. It's a common occurrence in plain weave (primarily) depending on the twist of the yarns, the sett, and finishing techniques.

I was looking at your TdF spinning and decided I want to be you when I grow up. :-) Between your weaving, which I already knew was awesome, and your spinning, which I now know is equally awesome, I sure have a high level to aspire to!!! Lovely, lovely stuff.

I'm spinning modified long draw for TdF as well. Yes, speedy, but I have trouble keeping the grist of the singles as fine as you. Mine are more the weight of your 2-ply. Any suggestions?

Yummy! And as I would expect from you, very fine. What's the wpi? Definitely weavable.

My TdF spinning is 2.5 lbs of white over black core roving (Jacob) and I'm spinning it long draw so it's thicker and fuzzier than my normal spinning. Weird...but FAST! I can fill a bobbin in 3-4 hrs.

I've noticed this too! When I go through my stash I can see my color trends over a 10 year period, in fact I pretty much can tell when I bought something based on the colorway.

It's good to have friends that make us stretch a bit isn't it? :-)

Pretty scarf!

Actually, Carolina Homespun is the only retailer of the cashmere/silk combed top blend (I include it in the spinning club now and then, but she's the only one who actually sells it on a regular basis).

I just sent Morgaine another BIG order of it, so she's well-stocked at the moment, too :-D

I love your finished scarf! Thank you for all the details on your process and sampling. This is great information for me as an aspiring weaver (I can't really even say I'm a beginner since I haven't even warped my loom yet).
This is such an inspiration to learn a lot and have the ability to make something like this.

Ann, I wish that I had been able to just go with it and trust Judith on the cram and space as you did. I hated the first 12 inches of the first piece so much that I could not face weaving the rest of it off.

I was inspired by your next to last piece and am looking forward to trying the technique in the smaller yarns.

See you soon

I have the same problem of coming home with inspiration and ideas that gradually leak out of my head/awareness. Let me know how the GTD list works for you. The trick for me, I think, would be where to keep the list that it doesn't get buried in the studio which is full to overflowing with inspiration and ideas already.

They were heated in giant pots, suspended over boiling water. They were the same ones used for making the rice and goodie filled things wrapped in leaves (like tamale steamers).

If you watch the movie; Eat, Drink, Man, Woman; you can see the school kitchen lunch scene as they pull the metal containers out of the giant pot.

Ooooh, tell me more, tell me more! Fireside looms are beautiful, and well-respected as tools, although I've never woven on one myself. Love that you've joined the dark side!

If you knit narrower shoulders and a deeper armscythe, then you will need less yarn (or have more leftover for a longer vest). You can always knit the CB lower than the sides, too.

I like the vest.

Loved your Picasa photos of your trip especially the underwater pics. They were really incredible. I can't believe you didn't take some of them with a professional underwater camera! What an adventure! My experiences with diving weren't good. I get motion sick really easy and I wind up throwing up more times than not. So it wasn't worth it for me for the expense.

Commiserating about the blanket, um, pillow. It's all John's fault!

My sweater has gone from a back to an almost-vest in the last week. And I have developed knitter's elbow as a result. Not sure if I'll end up with sleeves or not. There's also the matter of how much yarn I have left. (Not a lot.)

Why is it that we do this to ourselves?

yes, you're anal....but adorable. Love your flashcards and spreadsheet. And had to laugh b/c when I picked up the sweater again a week or so ago, after letting it languish since, oh, June, I had the same mental blank on what I was doing. I'm back in the swing of things...and not thinking about how many days until SOAR, or what % of the sweater is done. But I'm re-committed, thanks to you. There's still a big question about finishing though.
